Backed up Excel files

In the location where I store my excel files, I also have Backup copies that are automatically created. Is excel creating these backups and if so how can I change the location where excel saves them?

I have Excel Options/Save/Auto Recover - checked, but I am sure this has nothing to do with the backups. Can anyone help?
