Basic auto-recognized date format

First off, using Excel 2010. I'm trying to change the default format for an auto-recognized date. Excel uses auto-recognition to attempt to guess what you are trying to enter in a cell and reformat accordingly, at least when the format for the cell has not been changed from default General. Everything I have read says that this auto-recognition will use the system settings. Excel is properly understanding that I am entering a date when I do "7/14" but for me it's converting it to a custom date formula "d-mmm" and showing "14-Jul". Why and how do I change it? I understand how simple it is to change the format of a cell, but I am just tired of having to.

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
