I want to run a set of IF statements if MyVariable does not start with a 6. I tried
If MyVariable Like "!6*" then

but even when MyVariable is 861, it returns false and does not run the if statements.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.
If you declare your variable as string, you can use INSTR() to test for the 6.
Code:
Dim MyVariable As String

MyVariable = Range("A1").Value

IF InStr(1, MyVariable, "6") > 0 Then....
