Hi again :) ok not sure if this can be done ...I have a workbook that contains 10 sheets, each sheet contains 40 names... now is there a way i could add another sheet that you can open and type a name in and it then takes you to the sheet where that name appears  ??
just a thought
Any ideas anyone

Best way to learn Power Query?
Read M is for (Data) Monkey book by Ken Puls and Miguel Escobar. It is the complete guide to Power Query.

Yes it can be done. How about providing some basic details such as where you're typing the name to be searched. For example, in the new worksheet if you type in "John Smith" in cell A1, which columns do the names appear in the other worksheets? Is it the same columns in each worksheet or does it vary? Do the worksheets have duplicate names? Does the name appear in more than 1 worksheet? Some specifics are necessary if you expect an answer.

When you post a question here, always include some basic details and the version of Excel you're working with.

Hi again

yes the names i would want to find would be typed into the new sheet, i would name that sheet "find name", i was hoping to dedicate one cell/merged cells somewhere on that sheet, where people would see that is where you need to type the name you are trying to find.
there would be no duplicate names , im using excel 2007. yes the worksheets have different names
i dont want to go to the trouble of setting up links or putting = to match cells etc.

just someway to type a name, hit return and the sheet would appear that the name appeared in.

Hi Colin
Do you really need the "Find Name" sheet ?
You could do the same thing with an InputBox, when the workbook opens.....if I'm understanding you correctly

Hi all

No i dont need to have another sheet, just thought that would be a logical place where people could go if trying to find a name that is somewhere in a set of 10 worksheets ??

How does the ctr+F thing work ???

Press Ctrl F on your keyboard and you will see the "Find and replace" box

Click "Options" and check the following

"within" = Workbook
"Look in" = Values
"Match entire cell contents" , if checked searching for "Pete" would not find "Peter", if unchecked it would.

Enter the name to search for in the box then hit "Find all"

Note, you could use "Find next" instead, "Find all" would be my choice, if there is more than one match then you will get a list showing all of them.
