Hi - I am trying to create a chart as an object within a sheet, but excel is not letting me. If I go through the chart wizard, the option "place chart: as object" is greyed out [as compared to the option "place chart: as new sheet"]. And if I try and copy a chart from another workbook, I cannot paste that into the file either, and I get the message "Microsoft Office Excel cannot paste the data." I have confirmed the file isn't protected, and also that I do not have these issues in any other files I have open. but unfortunately I'm still stumped!

Any help would be great, thank you!

How can you automate Excel?
Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
No, it isn't. The file is my "personal" file where I keep my personal macros - so there is the chance that I somehow accidentally did something in VBA to cause this.

Tools-Options - View tab, make sure Show All is selected for Objects.
if 2007 or later, then Excel options, Advanced, 'Display options for this Workbook', 'for objects show:' - All.

I wonder if Excel needs the workbook's window to be visible to perform this operation.

Rorya - you hit it right on the head - that was the problem, all objects were set to be hidden. thank you so much!
