'=cell' returns '=cellref' and not the value?

Hi all,

using excel 2003 and when I try to link a cell in the same tab I get the cell reference. e.g. if a1 = 10 and in cell d1 I enter =a1, instead of showing 10 I get =a1. Is this an option issue at all?

Excel Facts

Convert text numbers to real numbers
Select a column containing text numbers. Press Alt+D E F to quickly convert text to numbers. Faster than "Convert to Number"
Check the fortmatting of cell D1. You may find it is Text. Change it to General or Number or whatever suits your data. Then select D1, press F2, Enter.
