I have seen a checkmark can be put on a box in Excel.

Can anybody show me how to put a small box which then I can put a check mark when I click on it.

See either the Form ToolBar or the Control Tool Bar (View>ToolBars)

on the forms toolbar is a check box. You click on the toolbar check box and then on your sheet click where you want to place it.
