I am trying to figure out why excel keeps freezing and would appreciate any help people can offer. file is large with multiple sheets. the problem i am having with it (for the first time) is that when i use Clear on the Sort & Filter section of the Data menu, the file freezes. "Clear" stays greyed out, and nothing else can be selected. if i use the drop down arrow in the column header, and remove the filter, its BAU and everything unfilters without issue.

any ideas?

Prevent GETPIVOTDATA. Select inside a PivotTable. In the Analyze tab of the ribbon, open the dropown next to Options and turn it off
Sounds like to me that you have A) the same value plotted multiple times, or B) have one of your values referencing another.

Both of these basically have the same result. You clear one series, and when doing so you clear data in a second series. This sends Excel into an 'oh no, I need to update this' loop, but the data is missing, so it loops indefinitely trying to find it.
