Combination chart

I'm trying to combine two different data sets that share the same x and y axes, but for some reason the x-axes don't line up correctly (presumably because my data values are not the same between the two data sets).

For example, Data 1:

jan-1 - 20
feb-1 - 30
mar-1 - 25
apr-1 - 40

Data 2:

jan-15 - 3
feb-15 - 5
mar-15 - 2

If I create two separate line charts from these data sets and try to combine them (copy + paste), the data points plotted are aligned either with the Data 1 x-axis values (jan 1, feb 1, etc.) or the Data 2 x-axis values (jan 15, feb 15, etc.). In other words, Excel does not seem to be interpolating the chart results correctly. I've verified the data is pointing to the right columns (using Excel 2007).

Any ideas? TIA.

An X-Y scatter graph should work for this - any other graph format simply uses the "X" values as labels so they won't line up properly.

Hi and welcome.

Set up your data something like this.

<table border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="font-family:Arial,Arial; font-size:10pt; background-color:#ffffff; padding-left:2pt; padding-right:2pt; "> <colgroup><col style="width:30px; " /><col style="width:64px;" /><col style="width:64px;" /><col style="width:64px;" /></colgroup><tr style="background-color:#cacaca; text-align:center;font-size:8pt; "><td > </td><td >A</td><td >B</td><td >C</td></tr><tr style="height:26px ;" ><td style="font-size:8pt; background-color:#cacaca; text-align:center; " >1</td><td > </td><td style="font-weight:bold; ">Data 1</td><td style="font-weight:bold; ">Data 2</td></tr><tr style="height:25px ;" ><td style="font-size:8pt; background-color:#cacaca; text-align:center; " >2</td><td style="text-align:right; ">1-Jan</td><td style="text-align:right; ">20</td><td > </td></tr><tr style="height:25px ;" ><td style="font-size:8pt; background-color:#cacaca; text-align:center; " >3</td><td style="text-align:right; ">1-Feb</td><td style="text-align:right; ">30</td><td > </td></tr><tr style="height:25px ;" ><td style="font-size:8pt; background-color:#cacaca; text-align:center; " >4</td><td style="text-align:right; ">1-Mar</td><td style="text-align:right; ">25</td><td > </td></tr><tr style="height:25px ;" ><td style="font-size:8pt; background-color:#cacaca; text-align:center; " >5</td><td style="text-align:right; ">1-Apr</td><td style="text-align:right; ">40</td><td > </td></tr><tr style="height:25px ;" ><td style="font-size:8pt; background-color:#cacaca; text-align:center; " >6</td><td style="text-align:right; ">15-Jan</td><td > </td><td style="text-align:right; ">3</td></tr><tr style="height:25px ;" ><td style="font-size:8pt; background-color:#cacaca; text-align:center; " >7</td><td style="text-align:right; ">15-Feb</td><td > </td><td style="text-align:right; ">5</td></tr><tr style="height:25px ;" ><td style="font-size:8pt; background-color:#cacaca; text-align:center; " >8</td><td style="text-align:right; ">15-Mar</td><td > </td><td style="text-align:right; ">2</td></tr></table>

Make sure the dates in column A are actual dates and not just text that look like dates. You can format the dates to display any way you like.

Select cells A1:C8 and make a chart
Type: XY Scatter chart, sub-type: Data points with connected lines.
