Combine countif and count statement

is there a way of combining a countif and counta statement e.g.

countif character is A then put the total in column B if not execute the counta statement "...."

does that make sense??:confused:

Hi,

Thanks for all your responses but i think its something along what HOTPEPPER said. so here is an example of how i want to use it :

=COUNTIF(TABF124!$G:K,"Y")
and
Code:
=COUNTA(TABF124!$G:$K)-2
, so if that put value in column A and then counta and put the value in B:)
