Comparing values of cells in a column with another column

Hi guys,

I'd like to know if there is some way to compare 500 names in one column (this is taken from spreadsheet A) with 2500 names in one column (this is taken from spreadsheet B) and determine which names appear in both columns. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many different ways to do this...here is one example.

Returns a number (the position of the match)

B1 and copied down =MATCH(A1,$C$1:$C$3,0)
D1 and copied down =MATCH(C1,$A$1:$A$12,0)

Compare the short list to the longer list.

Let's assume the short list is in Sheet1 A2:A501.

The longer list is in Sheet2 A2:A2501.

On Sheet1 enter this formula in B2 and copy down to B501:

=IF(COUNT(MATCH(A2,Sheet2!A$2:A$2501,0)),"In Both","")
