All,

How can I combine text and numeric values in a spreadsheet? Do I use a combination of concatenate and text functions?

Below are the values in each cell on my spreadsheet that need to be combined into one sentence and into one cell.

C4=28
C5=155555
C8=John Doe
C9=156
C10=12
C11=ACCU 8000
C13=$7000.00
C14=$1500.00
C17=$350.00
C18=John Doe

You're help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

-Johnny

Excel Facts

What is =ROMAN(40) in Excel?
The Roman numeral for 40 is XL. Bill "MrExcel" Jelen's 40th book was called MrExcel XL.
What is your expected return? Something like this?

<b>Excel 2007</b><table cellpadding="2.5px" rules="all" style=";background-color: #FFFFFF;border: 1px solid;border-collapse: collapse; border-color: #A6AAB6"><colgroup><col width="25px" style="background-color: #E0E0F0" /><col /><col /><col /></colgroup><thead><tr style=" background-color: #E0E0F0;text-align: center;color: #161120"><th></th><th>C</th><th>D</th><th>E</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">4</td><td style="text-align: right;;">28</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style=";">28155555John Doe15612ACCU 8000$7000.00$1500.00$350.00John Doe</td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">5</td><td style="text-align: right;;">155555</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">6</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">7</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">8</td><td style=";">John Doe</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">9</td><td style="text-align: right;;">15600%</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">10</td><td style="text-align: right;;">1200%</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">11</td><td style=";">ACCU 8000</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">12</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">13</td><td style="text-align: right;;">$7,000.00 </td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">14</td><td style="text-align: right;;">$1,500.00 </td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">15</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">16</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">17</td><td style="text-align: right;;">$350.00 </td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">18</td><td style=";">John Doe</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr></tbody></table><table cellpadding="2.5px" rules="all" style=";background-color: #FFFFFF;border: 1px solid;border-collapse: collapse; border-color: #A6AAB6"><thead><tr style="background-color: #E0E0F0;text-align: center;color: #161120"><th><b>Sheet1</b></th></tr></td></thead></table><br /><br /><table width="85%" cellpadding="2.5px" rules="all" style=";border: 2px solid black;border-collapse:collapse;padding: 0.4em;background-color: #FFFFFF" ><tr><td style="padding:6px" ><b>Worksheet Formulas</b><table cellpadding="2.5px" width="100%" rules="all" style="border: 1px solid;text-align:center;background-color: #FFFFFF;border-collapse: collapse; border-color: #A6AAB6"><thead><tr style=" background-color: #E0E0F0;color: #161120"><th width="10px">Cell</th><th style="text-align:left;padding-left:5px;">Formula</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><th width="10px" style=" background-color: #E0E0F0;color: #161120">E4</th><td style="text-align:left">=CONCATENATE(<font color="Blue">C4,C5,C8,C9,C10,C11,TEXT(<font color="Red">C13,"$0.00"</font>),TEXT(<font color="Red">C14,"$0.00"</font>),TEXT(<font color="Red">C17,"$0.00"</font>),C18</font>)</td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></table><br />

You can use the following formula:

=(C4 & " " & C5 & " " & C6 & " ")

That gives you the following (add a comma between the " " to separate values with commas...etc): <table style="width: 251px; height: 36px;" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><col width="138"><tr height="17"> <td style="height:12.75pt;width:104pt" height="17" width="138">28 1555555 John Doe </td> </tr></table>

Mr. Kowz,

Thank you. Yes that is the desired result. Now how can I separate each entry in the formula, so it looks more like a sentence? Also, if I was to add Store28 to C4 would that existing formula you have work to pull that specific information for that field?

As far as separating, it all depends what you want it to look like. I might recommend an approach that directly concatenates the cells rather than using a concatenate formula:

<b>Excel 2007</b><table cellpadding="2.5px" rules="all" style=";background-color: #FFFFFF;border: 1px solid;border-collapse: collapse; border-color: #A6AAB6"><colgroup><col width="25px" style="background-color: #E0E0F0" /><col /><col /><col /></colgroup><thead><tr style=" background-color: #E0E0F0;text-align: center;color: #161120"><th></th><th>C</th><th>D</th><th>E</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">4</td><td style=";">Store 28</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">5</td><td style="text-align: right;;">155555</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">6</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">7</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">8</td><td style=";">John Doe</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">9</td><td style="text-align: right;;">15600%</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">10</td><td style="text-align: right;;">1200%</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">11</td><td style=";">ACCU 8000</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">12</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">13</td><td style="text-align: right;;">$7,000.00 </td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">14</td><td style="text-align: right;;">$1,500.00 </td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">15</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">16</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">17</td><td style="text-align: right;;">$350.00 </td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">18</td><td style=";">John Doe</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">19</td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style="text-align: right;;"></td><td style=";">Store 28 had 155555 transactions over the course of the year.  John Doe was our best customer, whose purchases increased 15600% and who accounted for 1200% of our revenue for GPS sales.  The model he purchased in bulk was ACCU 8000.  Each unit cost $7000.00 and we made a $1500.00  profit off of each one.  As a result, we have chosen to give a $350.00 credit to John Doe for each unit he purchased.</td></tr></tbody></table><table cellpadding="2.5px" rules="all" style=";background-color: #FFFFFF;border: 1px solid;border-collapse: collapse; border-color: #A6AAB6"><thead><tr style="background-color: #E0E0F0;text-align: center;color: #161120"><th><b>Sheet1</b></th></tr></td></thead></table><br /><br /><table width="85%" cellpadding="2.5px" rules="all" style=";border: 2px solid black;border-collapse:collapse;padding: 0.4em;background-color: #FFFFFF" ><tr><td style="padding:6px" ><b>Worksheet Formulas</b><table cellpadding="2.5px" width="100%" rules="all" style="border: 1px solid;text-align:center;background-color: #FFFFFF;border-collapse: collapse; border-color: #A6AAB6"><thead><tr style=" background-color: #E0E0F0;color: #161120"><th width="10px">Cell</th><th style="text-align:left;padding-left:5px;">Formula</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><th width="10px" style=" background-color: #E0E0F0;color: #161120">E19</th><td style="text-align:left">=C4&" had "&C5&" transactions over the course of the year. Mr. Kowz,

Thank very much! The second one you recommended worked perfect.

It is possible for me to use your first formula and have it produce spaces? Or is that not possible with that particular formula? The reason being is I want to learn how to do this various ways for education wise. What type of books would you recommend for me to use to learn how to create these types of complex formulas?

You can, but I would not recommend it. in the below example, I only showed enough to illustrate how it works:

As far as learning tools, check out the podcasts and books that MrExcel has on his website/store. There is a lot of handy information in those!
