I'm using Excel 2010 and having trouble using the conditional formatting feature. It's all different in 2010 version.

I am simply trying to make a cell....or multiple cells, within a row turn RED if a text in in column "E" contains the woed NO.

I can't figure it out..can someone please show me the way?

How can you automate Excel?
Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
Hi Marq,

  1. Highlight the entire range
  2. Home tab >> Styles >> Conditional Formatting >> Manage Rules >> New Rule
  3. Use a formula to determine which cells to format
  4. Edit the Rule Description: =$E1="NO"
  5. Select Format >> OK >> OK

If you could do that in an earlier version of Excel, in 2020 try this ..

Conditional Formatting|New Rule|Use a formula to determine which cells to format| then enter your formula and format as you would have previously.

If it is the formula you are having trouble with, could you tell us more about the possible values that can be in column E?

  1. select your area e.g A1:E10 then from home tab
  2. choose Conditional formatting
  3. and choose New Rule
  4. choose "use a formula to determine cell to format"
  5. write this formula =$E1="NO"
  6. choose your format as you want
  7. Ok

Column E with have either manually plugged "Yes" or "No"....I only need formatting to kick in if "No" is in the cell in column E.

I'm using the example...still not getting it working...let me try again.

Then the descriptions that Jeffrey and Yahya have given should do what you want. Select the cells you want couloured first then the other important factor is in the formula given (=$E1="NO") you may need to change the 1. It should be whatever row the active cell is in. So, if you first selected from B5 to D24, then use a 5 in the formula instead of a 1.
