Col A is a list of random numbers

Col B at irregular intervals will have a "sum" formula adding a number of cells in col A (may not be consecutive)

Can the cells referenced in the sum formula )col A) become highlighted (either cell colour or text colour) when I select the relevant cell in Col B

Well, one easy solution would be to press F2 when you select the "appropiate" cell in column B. Try it, it's a very cool thing to use
