I would like to get a particular cell to shade when the SUM of various cells is greater than 136. How to do this?

eg
D10 to shade when (D10+D11) is greater than 136

or
B10 to shade when SUM(D10:D11+M9:N11) is greater than 1089

I seem only to be able to cond-format individual cells.

Excel Facts

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
Use the "formula is" option in conditional formatting, e.g. for your first example select D10 and use "formula is"

=SUM(D10:D11)>136

for the second select B10 and use

=SUM(D10:D11,M9:N11)>1089
