Conditional sum range based on values of adjacent cells

I have a 3 column data table as shown below and need a formula for row D. If the value of column A is Y, the value of column B can only be blank (indicated by 0 below). If the value of Column A is N, column B can be either N or X, The X indicates this is a new string of N's so it will always be an X if it follows a Y row, but may or may not be an X if following an N

Y__0__8______0

N__X__5______=5+3+7

N__0__3______0

N__0__7______0

N__X__5______=5

N__X__3______=3+4

N__0__4______0

Y__0__7______0

In column D, I need a formula that sums all the N value in a string of N's

It would start IF(B1="X", "value if true", "")

What formula is needed for the "value if true" to achieve the results above

So close Aladin! One problem though - The Y value only stops the summation if it is the last value in the column. To see what I'm talking about, make the 4th cell in column A a Y and the value in D2 will remain 15 while it should drop to 8.

Right. Also better to go for a shorter formula instead of debugging the suggestion I made.
