I have A2 populated with the name of the month (January) and A4 with a year (2005). In D2, I want to assemble a date like 1/01/2005. Thought this should be relatively simple but seeming to have problems with it.

Lock one reference in a formula
Need 1 part of a formula to always point to the same range? use $ signs: $V$2:$Z$99 will always point to V2:Z99, even after copying
James,

I think we are missing something. If month is in A2, year in A4, where is the day? You need all three to make this combo.

Was actually hard coding "1" for the day since I am looking for the 1st day of the month (A2) and then the first day of the next month (A2+1 in a sense).

Since A2 is January, I should have 1/1/05 and 2/1/05.

Try the following...

=DATEVALUE(A2&" 1, "&A4)

Hope this helps!
