I have a spreadsheet and need to copy check boxes and drop down menus 119 times, how do i fill the corresponding cells with these forms and have them link to cells in their rows rather than the cell first linked to the check box and drop down menu

I used the forms toolbar to create the check boxes and drop down menus

I tried changing the linked cell from $A$2 to a2 in hopes that when the fill function did its work it would use a3, a4, etc.... This did not work, all research has suggested marcos, I tried those however turned out to be more work than actually manually changing the linked cell.

Hello & Welcome to the Board,

I don't think you are going to do this to well without the use of a macro, but I could be wrong.

I think you should reconsider all those checkboxes anyway.

Take a look here http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/showthread.php?t=452093&highlight=checkboxes+column

For the drop down menus you need to provided a little more info such as, what is the purpose and where do they get there info?

thanks for the reply

the drop downs are for the following

gender: male
female

age: <55 31-54 >55

and race with 8 choices

this is for a ARRA Demogrpahic Report

the problem with the macros is that the report loses and gains people and the adjustments at that level are not doen by me, and the macro checkboxes tend to stay present and don't delete with the row. I am trying to make this as rudimentry as possible per supervisors instructions. The other problem is that according to those instructions some checkboxes require no text identifier which caused an error message with the macro method. There is a column header reading scheduled with a checkbox in cell a2, with two more cells that have a yes and a no check box in them (cells e2 and j2), and according to my supervisor i cannot deviate from that due to the estetics of the report when printed

I still think this is not the best setup. You need to copy check boxes and drop down menus 119 times...but at the same time the report loses and gains people. So your saying 119 times this time, but what about the next time.

Instead of check boxes how about data validation!

rudimentry as possible per supervisors instructions

I understand the need to keep a spreadsheet as simple as possible, but if you are having difficulty with it now maybe you will also in the future.

Anyway, with this being said, without seeing more information about the cells you currently use plus what you really need the sheet to do it's hard to give an exact answer.

Please see my signature with a method to show a sample of your spreadsheet.

Excel Workbook
ABCDEFGHIJ
1ScheduledDivLastFirstResidentZip CodeGenderAgeRaceContract
2yes noyes no
Sheet1
Excel 2000

cells g2, h2, and I2 are the ones with the drop down boxes... which are not showing up for some reason right now. column A, E, and J have check boxes. A2 has no label, E2 has two check boxes labeled yes and no as does J2.
my supervisors prefer the check boxes over manually typing, however the macro issue i had was with cells e2 and j2. I have all of these cells linked to send values that create a criteria for a mail merge document and excel mailing list. with that being said a2 has the most important criteria purpose. I hope this clears things up a bit

If you only have a fixed number of choices, would cells with list Validation be an option rather than DropDowns. Two option lists could substitute for checkboxes.

These cells would be easy to copy. Or only the Validation, without the rest of the cell could be copy/paste specialed.

this has been taylored by my supervisors and no one is budging on changes anytime soon. It was given to me that way and told to make it work, just trying to save time and aggravation from doing it manually as there is a similar project coming up with a need for 500 or so checkboxes
