Copy from other sheet without opening it results in error?

Can anyone tell me why the below results in an error (Application-defined or object-defined error)?

WorkSheets("Sheet1").Range(Cells(1, 1), Cells(1, 3)).Copy

PS. Active sheet when macro is run is "Sheet2".

It's probably becuase you've not referenced the worksheet for the Cells.

If you do that VBA will assume you mean the Cells of the active sheet, and if the active sheet is not Sheet1 then it will cause an error.

With WorkSheets("Sheet1")
    .Range(.Cells(1, 1), .Cells(1, 3)).Copy
End With
