Copy part of cell and paste in another cell

Greetings...
I'm trying to copy part of cell that has data in format name.xxx.xxx.xxx I want to be able to copy the 'name' from the cell and paste in another cell on the same worksheet. 'name' is not fixed length; however, it will always end with a 'period' (.).
Tried recording a macro, but even with releative references it just replaces the same name over and over; and worse, changes cell data.
