I have a spreadsheet that has columns a : bp
some cells may be empty

In column a there is a unique ref number that may be used on a number of lines

my main aim is to copy the whole row of any data with the same ref no and past in to another sheet

I find that if there are any missing spaces I only can copy the ref number. However if I fill in thoses columns it still only copies the first 4 columns

Macro presently used:

Sub Copy_With_AutoFilter1()
'Note: This macro use the function LastRow
Dim My_Range As Range
Dim CalcMode As Long
Dim ViewMode As Long
Dim FilterCriteria As String
Dim CCount As Long
Dim WSNew As Worksheet
Dim sheetName As String
Dim rng As Range

'Set filter range on ActiveSheet: A1 is the top left cell of your filter range
'and the header of the first column, D is the last column in the filter range.
'You can also add the sheet name to the code like this :
'Worksheets("Sheet1").Range("A1:D" & LastRow(Worksheets("Sheet1")))
'No need that the sheet is active then when you run the macro when you use this.
Set My_Range = Range("A1:D" & LastRow(ActiveSheet))
My_Range.Parent.Select

'Firstly, remove the AutoFilter
My_Range.Parent.AutoFilterMode = False

'Filter and set the filter field and the filter criteria :
'This example filter on the first column in the range (change the field if needed)
'In this case the range starts in A so Field 1 is column A, 2 = column B, ......
'Use "<>Netherlands" as criteria if you want the opposite
'My_Range.AutoFilter Field:=1, Criteria1:="=Netherlands"

'If you want to filter on a cell value you can use this, use "<>" for the opposite
'This example uses the activecell value
'My_Range.AutoFilter Field:=1, Criteria1:="=" & ActiveCell.Value

'This will use the cell value from A2 as criteria
'My_Range.AutoFilter Field:=1, Criteria1:="=" & Range("A2").Value

When did Power Query debut in Excel?
Although it was an add-in in Excel 2010 & Excel 2013, Power Query became a part of Excel in 2016, in Data, Get & Transform Data.
Try this on a copy of your data
Code:
Option Explicit

Sub ParseItems()
'Jerry Beaucaire  (11/11/2009)
'Based on selected column, data is filtered to individual sheets
'Creates sheets and sorts sheets alphabetically in workbook
'6/10/2010 - added check to abort if only one value in vCol
Dim LR As Long, Itm As Long, MyCount As Long, vCol As Long
Dim ws As Worksheet, MyArr As Variant, vTitles As String, Oops As Boolean

Application.ScreenUpdating = False

'Column to evaluate from, column A = 1, B = 2, etc.
   vCol = 1

'Sheet with data in it
   Set ws = Sheets("Data")

'Range where titles are across top of data, as string, data MUST
'have titles in this row, edit to suit your titles locale
    vTitles = "A1:E1"

'Spot bottom row of data
   LR = ws.Cells(ws.Rows.Count, vCol).End(xlUp).Row

'Get a temporary list of unique values from column A
    ws.Columns(vCol).SpecialCells(xlConstants).AdvancedFilter Action:=xlFilterCopy, _
        CopyToRange:=ws.Range("EE1"), Unique:=True

'Sort the temporary list
    ws.Columns("EE:EE").Sort Key1:=ws.Range("EE2"), _
        Order1:=xlAscending, Header:=xlYes, OrderCustom:=1, _
        MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _
        DataOption1:=xlSortNormal

'Check for more than one value in list
    If ws.Range("EE" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row > 2 Then

'Put list into an array for looping
'(values cannot be the result of formulas, must be constants)
        MyArr = Application.WorksheetFunction.Transpose(ws.Range("EE2:EE" _
            & Rows.Count).SpecialCells(xlCellTypeConstants))

'clear temporary worksheet list
        ws.Range("EE:EE").Clear

    Else
        ws.Range("EE:EE").Clear
        Oops = True
        GoTo ErrorExit
    End If
