Hello,

I need to be able to copy text from a protected cell and then paste it part way through a string within an unprotected cell.

(I can copy the entire unproteced cell but I can't then paste it within the formula bar for the unprotected cell - they paste option is shaded out. And I can't copy text directly from the formula bar of a protected cell.)

How do I do this? Either directly or using a macro.

Many thanks for your help,

Poiu

Excel Facts

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
I need to be able to copy text from a protected cell and then paste it part way through a string within an unprotected cell.

I don't think you can do it that way...regardless of cell protection..
Even on unprotected cells.
If you want to paste into the formula bar, then you must have copied from within the formula bar.
You can't copy a cell, and then paste into the formula bar.
Because when you copy a cell, you not only copy the text in the formula bar, but the formatting of the cell as well..

Hi Jon, sorry I worded the question slackly, I'll try again:

"I need to be able to copy text from the formula bar of a protected cell and then paste it part way through a string within an unprotected cell."

Any ideas? :)

You will have to unprotect the sheet...
or

If you have an available, unused/unprotected cell that can be used as an intermediate...
Copy the protected cell
Paste special values to the available/unprotected cell
Then you can copy from the formula bar of that cell
And paste to the formula bar of another cell...

Ahh thank you, getting closer.

Ideally I'd like the user to be able to highlight the cell with the text to be copied, hit ctrl+c then go to the unprotected cell, click where they want to insert the text within the formula bar and click ctrl+shortcut.

I've used the record button to create some vba but I can't see how to insert the text where the blinking cursor is? Is there any way of getting the blinking cursor position into vba?

Thanks!
