Corrupt file after Copy and Paste

I have encountered a strange problem that affects one PC and not another.

In Excel there is an embedded file that can be opened by double-clicking the icon. However, if the embedded object is copied and then pasted to a folder, the file cannot be opened using the default application. On another PC using the same Excel workbook, there is no problem copying, pasting and then opening the copied file.

This was first noticed with an embedded zip file, but it was found that the same problem occurs with other files (e.g. .txt).

Further experimenting shows that it also happens with files embedded in Word, so it is likely to be an Office problem and not just Excel.

Using Excel Standard 2010 (64-bit) on Windows 7 Enterprise.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing the unusual behavior, would be very much appreciated.
