Count formula

Hello, I am wanting to do some simple count formula and only aware of the 'counta' rule. This is what I would like to do.

I have 60 rows of names each one says either M or F. I would like to count the 'M' s and the 'F' s as two seperate results.

Also
In one row I have the Date of birth in the format of 01/12/66. I would like to know how many I have born in December? Is that possible?

=SUMPRODUCT(--(MONTH(B1:B100)=12)
