COUNT IF WITH OTHER FUNCTIONS

HOW TO USE COUNTIF WITH OTHER FUCTIONS?

My requirement is to count the no of cells that have a value of Length greater than 5. Have tried several ways but not getting the desired result.
Currently Using

= COUNTIF(B8:B1000, "(LEN(B8:B1000))>5" )

The above formula returns a zero whereas should return 311.

is that strings? or values? if values length greater than 5 means bigger than 99999.
