Hello everyone
I am wondering if this question has ever been asked here or elsewhere. I am looking for a formula that will "turn a certain character into a number". For example: if I have the letter "z" in a row appearing three times and I want "z" to represent number 2, then, the formula should return the result as "6" (3xZ=6). If this is possible, can I also have the same formula for z representing 3, 4 and 5 as well? In the case of this same character representing number 1, I already know that the formula is for example "=COUNTIF(R5:CQ5;"Z").
I hope that my explanation is clear. Thanks!

Excel Facts

Can you AutoAverage in Excel?
There is a drop-down next to the AutoSum symbol. Open the drop-down to choose AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, or MIN
If you want Z to represent 2, you can just use
Excel Formula:
=COUNTIF(R5:CQ5;"Z")*2

Solution
Just one more question Mr. Fluff. Can I have a combination of five characters in a single formula, for example: a=1, b=2; c=3; d=4 and e=5?

Imagine that I have all these characters in the same row, each of them representing the values as I mentioned...

You could use a countifs for each value & add them together.
