Count the number of times a char appears in a cell

I would like to count the number of times a certain character appears in a cell. i.e 'WHBBBBWW' has the value B 4 times. Is there a formula to calculate this, along the lines of COUNTIF(A1, "B"), but for a single char within a single cell?

Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+2 to format cells as time. (Shift 2 is the @ sign).
