Counter Formula

Need a counter. This formula works correctly to give the total instances of the E of a row for the given range:

=COUNTIF($E$244:$E$964,E244)

If this formula works, why does this formula not work for the larger range which includes data above the formula cell?

=COUNTIF($E$244:$E$242,E18)

The first formula yields the total number of instances for the range 964:244 of the E of the formula cell row. Shouldn't the second one do the same thing over the range 242:18?

Sorry I got it...the first two are the range and the last the entry being counted...

=COUNTIF($E$18:$E$242,E244)
