Countif column A isn't = to B

Hello,

I've seen a similar question answered somewhere else but when I tried to use the same formula it didn't work.

I'm trying to get a total for where the values in one column don't equal the values in another column. For example:

Column A Column B
Dog Dog
Cat Dog
Mouse Mouse
Dog Cat
Cat Cat
Total diff: 2

I've seen people use sumproduct but I can't quite get the formula to work. Any help would be really appreciated.

Try

=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A5<>B1:B5))

For my knowledge, what does the -- do?

-- coerces an array of False/True to an array of 0/1 so that the formula returns a count.
