Countif = Is Number

I can solve my problem another way, but is there a way to count the number of cells in a range which contain a number.

I have googled and can't find anything.
I tried = Countif(A9:A18,ISNUMBER,) but had no luck.
I can do this with a "helper column" but it seems such a simple concept I must be missing something.

just use the simple =count(A9:A18) formula.
