I have a sheet with these columns

Column C Column D
Safety Safe
Safety Safe Hot
Safety Safe Hot Space
Operator Safe
Operator Safe Hot
Operator Safe Space Excav

I am trying to work out a formula that will allow me to count the number of times "Hot" is listed for each "Operator" entry in column C.

I have tried the following, but it does not work.

=COUNTIFS(C2:C7,"Operator",D2:D7,"Hot")

Excel Facts

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
Maybe:

=COUNTIFS(C2:C7,"Operator",D2:D7,"*Hot*")

or if col C can contain other text with Operator

=COUNTIFS(C2:C7,"*Operator*",D2:D7,"*Hot*")
