Counting cells please help!

I have a really easy question but I am not sure how best to do this...I literally need to count a number of cells..not the value that is in the cells as it is just text. However there are some cells with no text in that I do not want to be counted. Is there a simple formula I can use to count cells with just text in please, and to avoid the cells with no text? Many thanks for any help with this!!

Thank you...i tried this but it doesnt work. E.g. I have 5 cells that say 'Mark' and i want this counted, then seven that say 'Wendy'...my question is how do i have one formula that counts all the cells for the individuals but without making different formulas, but it will pic up the different names. Thank you!!

Hi how can I use this to count certain text in a cell e.g. 'Bob' eg. bob has 5 cells, but use the same formula to pick up 'wendy' eg with a count of 10 cells too without making different formulas for each name if this is poss, but to count the names separatley eg. wendy = 10, bob =5 i hope this makes sense!

I would like the formula to count the cells saying 'Mark' and give me that total, and the cells saying 'bob' to give me the total saying bob eg. if mark has 10 cells i would like the count to say mark =10 and so on but without creating different formulas to count per name. ideally the formula would recognise the different names and count the cells with each name in separately. thanks! much appreciated
