Counting data in a cell

I have a spreadsheet where I've entered multiple numbers in a cell. I've entered this in about 500 or more cells and now I need to figure how many separate items there are. For example, in one there will be 5 different numbers. In another cell there's 4 different numbers. The total here is 9 different items. Is there something I can enter to figure how many different items there are total in all of the cells. I don't want to total the numbers and I don't want to hand count.

Are you trying to count for example if a cell has: 1234
the instances of 1
the instances of 2
the instances of 3
the instances of 4
?????
or something else???

Yes. If the separator between the values stuffed into a single cell is CHAR(10), assuming that multiple-value cells are in A from A1 on, apply:

=1+LEN(A1)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A1,CHAR(10),""))

to column B from B1 on. To get the desired count, use:

=SUM(B-range)
