Counting Days

I want to put a start date on the spreadsheet in column A and in the column next to it (column B), I want it to show how many days have past between the start date and today's date.

Example:
Column A Column B (Today's Date 7/12/11)

7/04/11 8

How do I do this?

Format as General, if necessary.

B1 =today()-a1


=Today() will update everyday to reflect what the current date is.

what if I want to have a "x" show up as the result if there is no date put in? how do i do that?

=IF(A1,B1-A1,"x")
