Counting in a column range

Hi

I'm looking for a function that can help me count the number of the same items in a column and place the count in the row next to the item. For example:

Data Output Required
1234 1
1234 2
1234 3
5678 1
5678 2
1234 4

Can someone help?

If the data starts in cell A1, try:

=COUNTIF(A$1:A1,A1)
