Counting the number of spaces...

I am using a Hyperion Excel and I was wondering if there is a formula I can use to count the number of spaces that preceed data, example:

NN66666-EFP&A
NN55555-Accounting
7777777-Treasury

In each example there are spaces that preceed the data, how can I count only those spaces, not any spaces that follow the data, just those that preceed it? Sometimes the data the preceeds the spaces is a number or a letter.

Shoot, MR Excel right justified my data, pretend the "-" below is a space:

-----NN55555-EFP&A
---NN66666-Accounting
--777777-Treasury

If they are truly space characters then try this for a count of leading spaces

=FIND(LEFT(TRIM(A1)),A1)-1
