Creative Ways for a year-to-year comparison???

Hello All, this is my first post! I'm happy to see there is a great community for people who need help like myself!

Anyways, my boss has asked me to think of a "creative" way to portray the percentages in some financial and business trends in Cloud Computing Services from the year 2009 to 2010. I showed him a stacked graph with the 2009 percentage and a percentage difference from 2010. But He says "I want something more than bars and lines." So I'm like what else really is there? I've googled a number of times for images that provide different types of percentage differences and all the images seem to be either numbers, lines or bars. I guess he wants me to tell a story but I can't think for the life of me. So if I can received some possible ideas and thoughts on how to portray, that would be awesome! The following is some of the data:

Welcome to the board!

Just a few thoughts, you could add in another few columns showing the increase/decrease from 2009 to 2010, and then a YOY % growth. Then, once you chart the metrics in columns, you could put the increase/decrease or YOY on the secondary axis to highlight a bit better what happened from one year to the next.

You could also sort off of one of those two columns so that your data is aligned from the least increase/decrease or YOY or vice versa. With your data the way that it is right now (as it is laid out in the post) the largest %'s are on the left and decline to the right. However, that isn't really telling at all if you are trying to explain the data as each series in the chart is unique and not dependant on the other data.

Other than that I would probably ask what story you are trying to tell. There are obviously only a few data points that you have posted, but there is likely a better way that you can make it more compelling (by sorting, colors, excluding certain data points, etc.)

Hey Clay! Thanks for your response. I guess I can do a bar graph for the percentages and then a line graph for YOY. I still have a feeling my boss will complain! I do appreciate your suggestions!

There is guy named Edward Tufte who is an expert at visual data. As a matter of fact quite famous in his field. Google his name. I took one of his seminars. The main thing with displaying data, is to show as much data as you can. Its all about the data. For data to display information, you have to be able to make comparisons. In your case, for starters, comparing a change from year to year, then rank that change from high to low. Like this.

You then can use colors to indicate increase (green) and decrease (red). Think about what caused the changes and if you can use that data in your chart or table. Looking at E. Tufte's stuff may inspire more ideas.
