Curious Excel file size management

I had a workbook with a sheet for information input into a table, and then a bunch of output sheets with formulas set up as forms for output (select a key, display relevant info, and print or PDF). The file was reaching 2MB and, surprisingly, started taking noticeably longer to recalc (I'm using the xlsm format on a machine with 8GB RAM, and a 2MB spreadsheet is getting noticeably slower? And Microsoft wonders why folks like to hate on their obsession with bloat).

So, I pulled out several of these output sheets into their own separate workbook. Now the main workbook size is still 1.6MB and each new workbook I created is over 700KB. I might have thought I'd save a little more than 400KB after removing six sheets each of which created 700KB workbooks on their own.

Wow, that's a lot to read, but thanks!

Let's see if I can get my head around it all sufficiently to make a difference in how I set up a workbook.
