This feature works great when I type information in. But when the cell I want to split refers to another cell it doesn't work. for example, if I type in cell a1, Cleveland Ohio then have cell b1=a1 the information comes over but the text to column feature won't work. Any ideas?

When they said...
When they said you are going to "Excel at life", they meant you "will be doing Excel your whole life".
You can only use Text to Columns on data (or "literal values"). It does not make sense to do it against a column of formulas.

You can use formulas to get just part of the string, if that's is what you are after.
