I've found everthing except what works. Is it even possible to do a custom format using the following as an example: AB-123456-789-CD? The idea is if it's entered into a cell as AB123456789CD it formats like the example. If a custom format is not possible could it be done using vba?

You can not do a Custom Format if letters are involved (only works with numbers). However, there are VBA solutions. Here are a few:
