Date Formatting

I have received a document and excel does not recognize the date. When attempting to change the column format to any date format, nothing changes in the column. However, if i type in the same date into one of those cells, the date format is then recognized and able to be changed.

I then attempted to use the text to columns method selecting delimited, no delimiters and Date: MDY. This changed some of the dates to the correct format but, other remain in the original state (unrecognized by excel and unable to be formatted). Again, typing the same date into that cell changes the cell to then be recognized and able to be formatted.

There's a lot of dates here that i can't get to change no matter what i've tried unless i type over them. I have to be missing something?

Excel Facts

What is the shortcut key for Format Selection?
Ctrl+1 (the number one) will open the Format dialog for whatever is selected.
Are the dates in MDY format or someother format?

When the doc was received? It looks like dd/mm/yyyy.
Text to columns i put in mds
Attempting to place any cell into another date format of any kind results in nothing unless i type that date over the date in a cell.

In that case when using text to columns you need to specify DMY, it should always be the format the date is in, not your local format.
