Date formula

I am using a formula =IF($D$1>L4,+$D$1-L4,-(+$D$1-L4)) to calculate a due date. But when something is overdue it still gives me a positive number. I would like to to state "Overdue" where would I add this. D1 = current date and L4 is projected date.

=IF($D$1>L4,$D$1-L4,L4-$D$1))
