I have been searching this subject for 2 days now and you think it would be something easy. When I type 1-Apr into a cell I want it to stay as general formatting instead of a date. As of now when I type 1-Apr into say cell F5 and you look at the function window it shows 04/01/2011, and I want it to stay 1-Apr

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
you could either change the cell format to date with custom format
dd-mmm
or else type a ' before typing the date. This will however change the format to text and not allow math/formulas to work

What does it matter what shows up in the Function window?
That shouldn't really affect anything.

If you enter it as Text, it will show 1-Apr, but then of course, it is text and not numeric, and won't work in calculations/sorting without first doing a date conversion.
