Dates in columns

I have a column where a date is entered when a letter is issued - column M. Sometimes a date will be entered in relation to the same case in column X. I want the dates from column X to appear in Column M if Column M is blank. If Column M has a date in it then I want to keep that date.

Column M = Date of stage 1 response
Column X = Date of stage 2 response

I need the formula to go in column M and I would overwrite it if I entered a date here.

Can this be done?

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
It sounds simple (unless I'm missing something!).

If you put:

=X1

into cell M1 and copy down as needed then it will populate the same value in the M column as appears in X. If you overwrite the cell in M with a date then the formula will be deleted anyhoo.

Cheers,

JD

No you're not missing anything. It was that simple! Don't know what I was thinking.

Thanks
