Dates in Pivot Tables

I am attempting to summarize information by month in a pivot table. However, the data I'm trying to summarzie is in the format mm/dd/yyyy so the pivot table brings in each date individually. I tried changing the date format to mmm-yy, but it still summarizes by the exact date, not the month. Any suggestions?
