One of the features in Excel is to double click on the right-hand lower corner of a selected cell to fill the cells below it w/ the same values in the selected cell.
But I have trouble understanding when this will or will not work. Can someone give the lowdown on the criteria that is required for this fill operation to function?

Thanks,

Doug S.

Hi Doug,

I believe that there must be a column of data adjacent to the column you are autofilling, since the autofill looks at the adjacent columns to determine how far down to fill. Also it will only fill down, not across horizontally.

Damon,
Thanks, but I just tried dclick in an area w/out adjacent cell w/ data and it worked w/ no problem.

Back to square 1.

Seti,
I use this feature regularly and follow along w/ your explanation. But I still get intermittent results. The thing that happens is when I d-click on the fill handle, nothing happens. So there must be something that Excel does not like.
I also experimented w/ this feature and the dclick and fill works when there is no filled adjacent cell.

Any other ideas here?
