DDE Link Problem

Here is the DDE link I am having problems with:

ILX|Q!XYZ

ILX=program I am getting stock qoutes from
Q=Quotes
XYZ=Stock ticker symbol

I have tried everything I can think of, but I cannot get a cell reference to work in place of the stock symbol like ILX|Q!A1

Anybody have an idea?
