I copy stats from websites and paste them into Excel, and often the stats come in the form of x-y, as in x out of y. My goal is to use text to columns to create one column for all x's and another for all y's.

But if I'm pasting in 7-12, Excel converts it to July-12, and I don't know how to convert it back, or stop it from happening in the first place. Anyone know how to end this monstrosity? Thanks in advance.

Home, Conditional Formatting, Highlight Cells, Duplicate records, OK to add pink formatting to any duplicates in selected range.
Excel does this if the cell is formatted as 'General'. You could change cell format to 'Text' to stop the 'conversion'.

That is bazarre, does it for me too.
I think because that web page is actually embedding an Excel Sheet. So it really is a DATE, formatted as d-m

Anyway, this formula will convert it back..

=TEXT(A1,"m - d")
