In my job as a drywall estimator, we received several house plans from a contractor where he wanted pricing for many options at different ceiling heights. For example, optional bedroom in basement, optional bath in basement, complete finished basement, first floor, optional sun room, optional bedroom extension, etc. Each of those were to be priced with 9' and 10' ceilings. We used our estimating software and exported the end product to Excel as we always do. We began separating the options on different tabs, using tab names like First Floor @ 9'. After creating several tabs and running a macro to process the data, Excel would crash. We would have to start over, losing several hours of work. We tried multiple times with disastrous results.

Unable to figure out why it was happening, I downloaded an alternative software, WPS Office and tried to use the spreadsheet in there. When I attempted to name tabs in that software with characters like @ or ', it would not permit them to be used.

I went back to Excel and named tabs without using special characters and did not have any more problems. I hope this may help someone else that runs into this problem.

Worksheet names cannot:
- Be blank .
- Contain more than 31 characters.
- Contain any of the following characters: / \ ? * : [ ]
- Begin or end with an apostrophe ('), but an apostrophe can be used in between text or numbers in a name.
- Be named "History". This is a reserved word Excel uses internally.
