I'm hoping that there's an easy way to do this, but I can't seem to find it.

If you want a number rounded, but displayed in thousands, what is the formula and/or formatting that would be required?

For example, the number 8,978,674:

With the formula "round(8978674,-3)", 8,979,000 is displayed, but I want to actually display in the cell is: 8,979

Any help on this would be appreciated

Hi,

would this help
=TRUNC(8978674/10^3)
kind regards,
Erik

EDIT: forgot to translate, now fixed
EDIT2: changed ugly layout

If you want to keep the value and just change the format try the following custom format.

#,##0,

Just a technicality, to display "8,979", the OP would need =ROUND(8978674/10^3,0) or =ROUND(8978674,-3), as TRUNC would display 8,978.

Or use sailepaty's suggestion.
